About
Los Desconocidos was founded in Tucson by a group of volunteers who work arduously to sustain the lives of migrants who cross the border with little water, food or aid in the Sonoran Desert. We are a non profit organization of like minded environmentalist, humanitarians, social justice advocates, artists, quilters and individuals who care deeply about the injustice of migration in a global economy.
Since late 2007, the group has cleaned up numerous lay-up sites, where migrants leave behind all their possessions, e.g. backpacks, clothes, photos, bibles and other bits and pieces of their belongings, before they continue onto their next leg of their journey. These campsites are scattered throughout the vast deserts between California and Texas all along the US/Mexico border. Los Desconocidos recycles the items such as water bottles, plastic bags, food containers, clothing, shoes and socks.
Many volunteers clean the desert while other volunteers embroider quilt squares for The Migrant Quilt Project.
